Tartans Split Results at University of Pittsburgh
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team competed at the University of Pittsburgh on Saturday, January 31 with Clarion University before they complete training for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in two weeks. The Tartans defeated Clarion 223-58 and fell to Pittsburgh 216-81.
Freshman Josh Taekman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) recorded a season-best time in the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching in 9:52.84 to win the event while sophomore Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.02. Walsh later won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.06.
Freshman Michael DiBacco (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) touched fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.41. In the 200-yard backstroke, sophomore Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) finished second in 1:57.29 with junior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) touching third in 1:57.38.
Junior Jay Jin (Canton, Mich./Canton) finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.73 with junior Philip Farr (Campbell, Calif./Bellarmine College) placing fourth in 1:00.27.
Sophomore Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) touched in 21.42 in the 50-yard freestyle to finish second, just ahead of freshman Tyler Goulding (Houston, Texas/Awty International) in third place in 21.74.
Senior Brian Ip (Sunnyvale, Calif./St. Francis) earned a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, touching in 48.33, while Goulding was fourth in 48.38. Junior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) recorded a season-best time of 4:46.80 in the 500-yard freestyle.
The Tartans closed the meet with a second-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Goulding, junior Joseph Robinson (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville), Jay, and freshman Kevin Steinhouse (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) touched in 1:25.58.
As mentioned, the Tartans will next compete at the UAA Championships. The meet will be hosted by Emory University and will start on Wednesday, February 11.
