Tartans Drop Road UAA Contest at #11 WashU

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team continued its University Athletic Association (UAA) three-game road trip with a 99-74 setback at 11th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon. The loss moves the Tartans record to 10-4 overall and 1-2 in UAA play while the Bears are now 12-2, 2-1.

How it Happened

  • WashU started the game on a 13-2 run over the first three minutes before extending the lead to 21-7 at the 15-minute mark.  
  • The home team had the hot hand in the first half converting 16-of-20 from the field to start, as the lead grew to 39-22 with 8:27 to play in the half.
  • The Tartans then score seven of the next nine points to cut the deficit to 41-29, but WashU answered and scored none straight.
  • The Bears then took a 58-36 lead into the locker room after they shot 61.1% (22-36) from the floor in the half while the Tartans shot 38.2% (13-34).
  • WashU started the second like the first and made 6-of-9 from the floor to extend the lead to 72-41.
  • Over the next five minutes, Carnegie Mellon used a 12-5 run that made the score 77-53. That was as close as the Tartans came, as the Bears went for the 99-74 win.

Tartan Stats

  • The Tartans shot 38.9% (28-72) from the floor and converted 8-of-31 from behind the arc for 25.8%.
  • Junior Justin Allen led the Tartans with 18 points.
  • Junior Buckley DeJardin finished with 12 points and graduate student R.J. Holmes ended with 11.

Bear Stats

  • The Bears shot 49,4% (38-77) from the floor and converted 12-of-29 from behind the arc for 41.4%.
  • Hayden Doyle led WashU with 26 points.
  • Drake Kindsvater scored 19, Ryan Cohen 14 and Will Grudzinski 11 for the Bears.
  • Connor May led all players with 12 rebounds.
