Tartans Close Spring Semester with Continued Academic Excellence
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – It was a terrific spring semester for Carnegie Mellon Athletics, as eight teams earned NCAA Championship appearances during the winter and spring seasons—while Tartans continued to shine in the classroom. An impressive 139 student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA, and nearly two-thirds posted a GPA of 3.50 or higher, exemplifying the department’s commitment to excellence on and off the field. Collectively, 15 of the 17 programs finished with year with a team GPA greater than 3.50.
Highlights include:
- Women's Basketball: Eight players earned 4.0s, contributing to the third-highest GPA among women's teams at 3.71.
- Women's Swimming and Diving: Thirteen athletes recorded 4.0 GPAs for the semester with the team sending six athletes to the NCAA Championships where they had their highest finish of 18th place since 2023 while achieving a semester GPA of 3.68.
- Women's Tennis: Five earned 4.0s while the team finished with the department's second-best GPA at 3.82 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament for the second time in four years.
- Women's Track and Field: Nine athletes were perfect for the semester with the team earning a 3.53 GPA with one athlete competing at both the NCAA Indoor and NCAA Outdoor Championships.
- Softball: The team won the most games in program history at 20 and had five athletes carry a 4.0 for the semester.
- Women's Golf: Earned the department's highest spring GPA at 3.84 with six of nine players earning perfect marks. The team placed second at the NCAA Championships for the second straight season.
- Men's Track and Field: Sixteen tallied a 4.0 for the semester while the program had three All-America performances for the collection of the indoor and outdoor seasons.
- Men's Tennis: A 3.74 team GPA with eight athletes earning a 4.0 led the men's programs while the team returned to the NCAA Championship field, advancing to the third round.
- Men's Swimming and Diving: Thirteen athletes were perfect for the semester with the team earning a 3.60 GPA while placing seventh at the NCAA Championships after one national title and 11 All-America performances.
- Men's Golf: Three athletes led the program to a 3.54 GPA and an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
- Men's Basketball: Two players earned 4.0s with the team earning a 3.64 GPA, the second-best among the men's programs.
Fifteen upperclassmen maintained cumulative 4.0 GPAs and 18 first years excelled with a 4.0 for the year. Across disciplines, student-athletes excelled, with the following achieving 4.0s:
- 51 in the College of Engineering
- 39 in the Tepper School of Business
- 28 in Dietrich College
- 11 in the Mellon College of Science
- Five from Information Systems
- Four in the School of Computer Science
- One in the College of Fine Arts
