Tartans Continue Academic Excellence Through Fall Semester
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The fall athletics season was highlighted by four team NCAA Championship appearances and six nationally-ranked winter and spring teams, while the Tartans continued to excel in the classroom. An impressive 156 student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA, and 67% earned a GPA of 3.50 or higher.
“Carnegie Mellon student-athletes continue to set the standard for what excellence looks like across academics and athletics,” said Director of Athletics Josh Centor. “This fall, we saw tremendous success in the classroom alongside outstanding national-level competition, reflecting the discipline and drive that define our community. Our student-athletes are proving every day that it is possible to pursue ambitious goals in multiple arenas while positively impacting those around them. This is what the Carnegie Mellon model of intercollegiate athletics is all about.”
Highlights include:
- Football: 30 players earned 4.0s, contributing to a team GPA of 3.58.
- Men’s Cross Country: With a 3.53 GPA and eight perfect GPAs, the team placed 15th at the NCAA Championships.
- Women’s Cross Country: Finished 6th nationally and collected a 3.58 GPA with six perfect GPAs.
- Volleyball: Achieved a 3.55 GPA with six perfect 4.0s and a run to the NCAA regional championship match.
- Women’s Soccer: Had the second-highest GPA amongst women’s teams at 3.65, with five 4.0s and another NCAA Championship first-round win.
- Men’s Soccer: Had the second-highest GPA amongst men’s teams at 3.77, with 17 perfect marks.
- Golf: The men tie for the top men’s team GPA with a 3.78, including five perfect marks, to go with a national ranking of fourth per NCAA stats. The women follow with a 3.62 GPA, four 4.0s, and a national ranking of two following a victory at the NCAA Preview.
- Tennis: The men’s team recorded a 3.78 GPA, with seven perfect marks and a sophomore reaching the ITA Cup semifinals. The women’s team earned a 3.69 GPA with three 4.0s and two freshmen ITA Cup representatives.
- Basketball: The men’s team carries a 3.66 GPA and five perfect GPAs, while the women’s team posted a 3.59 GPA with five 4.0s.
- Swimming & Diving: The men’s team currently holds the nation’s top time in four events and finished the semester with a 3.65 GPA and 16 4.0s. The women’s team recorded a 3.52 GPA with seven perfect marks.
Seventeen upperclassmen maintained cumulative 4.0 GPAs. Across disciplines, student-athletes excelled:
- 54 in the College of Engineering
- 47 in the Tepper School of Business
- 41 in Dietrich College
- Six in the Mellon College of Science
- Five in the School of Computer Science
- Three in the College of Fine Arts
