(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – For the eighth year, the Carnegie Mellon University Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation participated in the Fall Frenzy, a month-long virtual-riding tournament through expresso.com.

This year, the Tartans revved it up and zoomed past their finals competitor, the University of Nebraska at Kearney, in the final hours of a two-day head-to-head match-up.

After 2 days, 5,642 miles, and a nail-biting final round of the Fall Frenzy — a champion has been crowned. UNK put up an incredible fight, but Carnegie Mellon walked away with the title and the official Golden Spokes Trophy. The two teams were neck and neck in the championship, tied at around 1,700 miles just 12 hours out from the close of the tournament.

The Tartans, who biked 880.1 miles in the Fearsome Four round, topped UNK by 232.4 miles, biking 2,937.2 miles in the championship round.

The Tartans ended with 12 racers finishing in the top 25 of the international event that started on September 28 with 104 schools participating. More than 200 Carnegie Mellon students, staff and faculty participated throughout the month with, student Nat McGrath finishing second overall with 553.6 miles ridden.

Past results for the Tartans include four years in the Fearsome Four with a previous max of 1,637 miles biked in 2016.

"It was the students that brought us over the top," said Pattye Stragar, Carnegie Mellon's Fitness Operations Manager. "We have always had a large faculty and staff representation and it was wonderful getting the students to ride, especially that last day!"
