Higgins and Mueller Honored by ECAC

(DANBURY, Conn.) – Junior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla.) and freshman Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown SIEM Academy) of the Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team received recognition by the Eastern Conference Athletic Conference (ECAC) following their week of play to open the season.  Higgins was named Corvias ECAC South Region Libero of the Week while Mueller was named Corvias ECAC South Region Rookie of the Week.
    
Carnegie Mellon started the season with six straight victories last week and extended its record to 7-0 with a win last night over Saint Vincent College.  The start of the season is the best under 11th year head coach Kim Kelly who picked up her 450 career win (20 seasons) and 250 at Carnegie Mellon.

Higgins started the season with 23 digs against Grove City and then posted an additional 62 more to finish with 85 digs in 19 sets in the opening week of play.

Mueller finished with a hitting percentage of .365 and accumulated 67 kills in her first week of collegiate play. She averaged 3.53 kills per set and recorded double-digit kills in five of the Tartans six games.  The freshman recorded a best 14 kills while hitting .600 in a 3-0 victory against SUNY New Paltz. The outside hitter also picked up six blocks and 14 digs.

The Tartans will next play at the 17th Annual Marcia French Memorial Invitational held in Cleveland, Ohio on the campuses of Case Western Reserve University and Baldwin Wallace University.  Carnegie Mellon will begin play on Friday, September 11 against Thiel College at 5:30 p.m. before playing Buffalo State at 7:30 p.m.  Both matches will be played at Case Western Reserve.
