(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team defeated the Penn State Berks Lions 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III women's soccer championships on Saturday evening infront a home crowd on the Carnegie Mellon campus.
Despite an advantage in corner kicks 4-1, the first half ended scoreless with the Tartans outshooting the Lions 6-2 overall and 2-0 on goal, with shots from junior Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) and freshman Tori Iatarola (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy).
The Tartans opened the second half with a quick goal by sophomore Megan Bartoshuk (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) in the 57th minute of play. After a chip in from senior Lauren Simicich (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), senior Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) sent a pass off her back heel to Bartoshuk who then struck the back of the net.
In the 66th minute of the game, off of a corner kick by junior Amanda Broderick (Audubon, Pa./Methacton), Reid score here 11th goal of the season by way of a header to give the Tartans a 2-0 edge over the Lions.
In th 89th minute of play, the Tartans solidified their victory when freshman Nicole Winegardner (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) sank the third goal of the game in the back the net off of tip passes from freshmen Sienna Stritter (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo School) and Katie Strycharz (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion).
Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) broke the school record for shutouts and wins by a goalkeeper in a single-season with 12, as she has started every game this season and has been in goal all but 10 minutes of play.
The Tartans women's soccer team will compete in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. on the campus of Carnegie Mellon.
