(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team led the Brandeis University Judges at the half but was unable to keep the lead in a 60-52 defeat on Sunday afternoon. The Tartans are now 9-11 and 1-8 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Judges move to 12-7 and 4-5 in the UAA.
The Tartans were led by sophomore Makayla Filiere's (Chandler, Ariz. / Hamilton) 16 points and sophomore Laurel Pereira's (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville North) 13 points. Junior Jenn Mayberger (Chesterfield, Mo. / Cor Jesu Academy) led the Tartans on the glass with 10 rebounds. The junior also dished out five assists and picked up four steals. Freshman Kylie Huffman (California, Pa. / Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic) and sophomore Katharine Higgins (Montclair, N.J. / Montclair) each had five blocks.
The Tartans took their third lead of the game at the 4:13 mark of the first quarter when a layup by sophomore Laura Ochsner (Chester Springs, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) made it 9-8. Pereira then drained a three-pointer to lead an 8-4 run to end the quarter with the Tartans ahead, 17-12.
Pereira started the second-quarter scoring and the Tartans would lead by double digits on three occasions before Brandeis finished the half with two buckets to cut the deficit to six, 33-27.
Filiere scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half as the Tartans shot 36.3 percent and made five shots from long range.
A 13-4 run by the Judges in the third period gave them back the lead, 43-42, with 2:16 to go. The Judges didn't relinquish that lead, building it to 12 late in the fourth on the team's third three-pointer of the period. The Judges improved their shooting in the second half from 27.8 percent to 32.4 percent, and made five triples while the Tartans made just one. The Tartans also were off the mark 30 times in the half, shooting just 18.7 percent leading to the come -back victory by the Judges.
The Tartans will next host Emory University on Friday, February 9 at 6:00 p.m.
