Vandenberg Wins 800 as Tartans Compete at the W&L Carnival

(LEXINGTON, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled south to Lexington, Virginia for the W&L Track and Field Carnival hosted by Washington and Lee University at Foster Stadium.

Sophomore Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) turned in the Tartans lone victory over the weekend when he crossed the finish line with a time of 1:53.31 in the 800-meter race.

Senior Billy Littlefield (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) turned in a third-place finish in the 10,000-meter run, as he crossed the finish line with a time of 32:38.20.

Junior Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and freshman Ben Neiman (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) turned in eight-place finishes.  Standish crossed in 58.53 in the 40-meter hurdles while Neiman crossed in 16.21 in the 110-meter hurdles.

Junior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) led the Tartans in the field events with a third-place finish in the hammer after throwing a career-best distance of 50.60 meters.  The junior also placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 15.08 meters and eight in the discus with a toss of 42.45 meters.  

Junior Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) placed sixth in the shot put after throwing 13.97 meters and seventh in the hammer with a toss of 46.46 meters while sophomore Gino Pilato (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) placed seventh in the discus with a distance of 42.69 meters.

Freshman Max Reinertsen (Esko, Minn./Esko) placed seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 12.81 meters.

The Tartans will be back in action when they host the Carnegie Mellon Mini-Invite Saturday, March 30.
