The #8 Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Grove City College 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. Senior Ben Bryant (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) put in the winner a minute into extra time to help advance the Tartans' record to 10-2-1 on the season.
Grove City went ahead 1-0 three minutes before halftime when Kyle Matherne scored an unassisted goal.
The Tartans had a number of chances in the first half but couldn't get any of their 17 shots past Brenden Alfery who made nine first half saves.
The Wolverines added to their advantage in the 69th minute when Tim Shackleton put an unassisted shot past sophomore Jacob Rice (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln).
Again the Tartans had their chances throughout the period and finally were able to break through when junior Chris Wysocki (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) scored in the 84th minute off a pass from freshman Connor Webb (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) to give the team hope of equalizing.
The equalizer came by way of junior Mike Ferraco (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills), who scored his third goal of the season and second in three games, with three minutes left in the half. Junior Max Tassano (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) earned the assist on the play.
The Tartans kept the momentum heading into extra time when Bryant put in the game-winner just 1:09 after the whistle off a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box. The goal was Bryant's fifth of the year and second game-winner.
Carnegie Mellon will have the weekend off before traveling to New York University for a 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon match on October 26.
