(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The #7 Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team defeated Allegheny College on Saturday, September 15 by a 2-0 score to move to 5-1 on the season. The Tartans scored goals in the first and second period and held the Gators (5-1) to two shots on goal.
In the ninth minute, the Tartans used smooth passing to move from the midfield to th right corner as junior Scott Gerfen (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) drove to the endline and centered a pass back toward the goal. Senior John Crawshaw (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carnegie) made a far post run and mat Gerfen's pass with a one-touch shot that Allegheny keeper John Lichina stopped. The rebound went right back to Crawshaw who didn't miss the net with his second attempt for the 1-0 advantage. The goal was Crawshaw's second of the year.
The Tartans put two other shots on goal in the first period but Lichina was there to stop both holding the score at 1-0 for the half.
Junior Chris Wysocki (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) had a chance to make the score 2-0, two minutes into the second period but the Allegheny defense was there to block the shot. The opportunity arose off a corner kick by senior Ben Bryant (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills). Bryant's corner to the far post was headed down by Crawshaw to Wysocki's foot at the opposite post.
The Tartans had a number of set piece chances with four corner kicks but the Gator defense cleared all attempts before Carnegie Mellon could get a shot off.
In the 83rd minute, junior Matt Sarett (Huntersville, N.C./Cannon) served a ball toward the goal from 30 yards away, looking for junior Max Tassano (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion). Tassano went up for the headed and distracted Lichina just enough that Sarett's service sailed through his hands for his second goal of the season.
The Tartans earned their third shutout of the season with junior Christopher Madden (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) recording the win in goal.
Carnegie Mellon will next play on Tuesday, September 18 at home against Washington & Jefferson College at 7:00 p.m.
