No. 20 Tartans Split a Pair of Five-Set Matches at Home DoubleTree Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team, ranked 20th nationally, opened play at its home DoubleTree Invitational Friday, September 25 and split a pair of five-set matches.  The Tartans started the evening with a 3-2 victory over Stevenson University before dropping the nightcap to John Carroll University.  Carnegie Mellon is now 16-2 overall.
    
Freshman Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn.) totaled 27 kills on the evening, including a season-best 16 in the Tartans setback to John Carroll. Junior Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) along with freshmen Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown SIEM Academy) also turned in back-to-back games with double-digit kills.  Gibbons tabbed 13 against Stevenson and 12 against the Blue Streaks while Mueller tallied 11 in both matches.  To open the invitational, freshman Sydney Bauer (Allen, Texas) recorded a season-best four service aces and junior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla.) had three.

 Junior setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) handed out 82 assists with a game-high 43 in the win over Stevenson.  Newton also totaled 36 digs with a career-best 20 in the Tartans setback.  Also defensively for the Tartans, Higgins totaled 51 digs, 30 coming against Stevenson, and sophomore Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) totaled 10 block assists and three block solos.  Seven of Donohue's block assists were in the Tartans win as it marked a career-high for the sophomore.

The Tartans return to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they face Pomona-Pitzer on the second day of the DoubleTree Invitational.
