Tartans Swim Past Case Western Reserve, 241-59, to Open the Season

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team opened the season at home against Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, October 28. The Tartans won the meet by a score of 241-59.

Opening the meet was the 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Mary Day (Warren, N.J. / Mount Saint Mary Academy), senior Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind. / Penn), senior Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y. / Penfield), and freshman Emma Graham (Mount Lebanon, Pa. / Mount Lebanon) with a win in 1:50.10. Sophomore Taylor Brown (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) then won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:50.70 with freshman Stefanie McMillan (Vancouver, Wash. / Skyview) coming in second in 10:52.20. McMillan and Brown later traded places in the 500-yard freestyle with McMillan touching in 5:18.28 and Brown in 5:21.02.

The Tartans swept the 200-yard freestyle with freshman Jessica Li (Clarksville, Md. / River Hill) winning in 1:57.43 while they finished 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle with sophomore Victoria Feng (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) touching in 24.98. Li later won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.03.

The 100-yard breaststroke was won by Hochstedler in 1:06.83 with junior Cassidy Smith (Carlisle, Mass. / Concord-Carlisle Regional) touching second in 1:07.05 and freshman Aileen Yu (Ellicott City, Md. / Marriotts Ridge) touching third in 1:08.71. Hochstedler also won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.12 with Feng finishing second in 2:27.02 and Smith third in 2:31.95.

Sophomore Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) touched just ahead of senior Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md. / Sidwell Friends School) in the 200-yard butterfly to win the event in 2:09.34. She later won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.81, another event the Tartans swept.

Freshman Jessica Chau (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.36 after touching second in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.68. The freshman later out-touched Nicklas-Morris in the 400-yard IM to win the event in 4:35.57 while Nicklas-Morris finished second in 4:40.09.

In diving, freshman Maddie Mianzo placed first on the 1-meter board with 214.73 points and first on the 3-meter board with 236.25 points. Sophomore Megan Roche (Potomac, Md. / Winston Churchill) was second on the 1-meter board with 201.07 points with freshman Lillie Widmayer (Old Bridge N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro) placing second on the 3-meter board with 197.78 points.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Feng, Shi, Li, and Graham closed the meet with a victory in a time of 1:38.93.

The Tartans will next host Clarion University on Saturday, November 4 at 11:00 a.m.
