(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The 18th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to Wilmington, Ohio, for the Wilmington College Tip-Off Tournament on Friday, November 18 and defeated Transylvania University, 80-60. The Tartans improve to 2-0 on the year and will face host Wilmington College (2-0) in the tournament finale on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Senior Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va.) finished with 31 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots to lead the Tartans after hitting all 12 attempts from the field and all seven shots from the free throw line. Senior Jackie Hudepohl (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook (Colgate)) scored 14 points and hauled down 14 rebounds with freshman Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) scoring a season-high 12 points.
Filiere made the first two Tartan baskets before Murphy started a 17-6 run for Carnegie Mellon which pushed the score to 21-11 with two minutes to play in the first quarter. Hudepohl and freshman Katharine Higgins (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) each hit a three-pointer while Murphy connected on four shot attempts during the run.
Two three pointers by Transylvania closed the quarter and the Tartans led 21-17.
Junior Anna Novak (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) drained a three-pointer on the Tartans first possession of the second half and later made another to put the Tartans up 34-23 with 7:15 to play before halftime. The Tartans would lead by 14 at the break, 49-35, with Murphy scoring 11 points for the quarter and 19 for the half.
Transylvania made up some ground in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 10 but the Tartans closed the deal in the fourth with a 19-9 run during the 10-minute frame to earn the 20-point victory.
The Tartans shot 47.7% from the floor and made 13-of-15 shots from the free throw line. The defense blocked 11 shots and held the Pioneers to 30.2% shooting for the game.
