(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - On the night junior Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) was honored for scoring 1,000 career points earlier this season, the junior center tallied 32 points to help lead the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team to a 70-62 win against visiting Emory University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The Tartans are now 17-6 overall and 6-6 in the Association, while the Eagles fall to 13-10 and 4-8.
The Tartans started the game by hitting nine of their first 10 shots to take a 20-7 lead 5:22 into the game. The Eagles then held the Tartans to two points over the final 4:38 of the quarter and first 2:39 of the second to tie the game at 22-22. During the stretch, the Tartans missed all nine of their shot attempts and turned the ball over four times.
The remainder of the second quarter saw the lead switch hands four times and the score tied on three additional occasions before the Tartans held a 34-32 advantage at the break. The Tartans hit just one field goal for the second quarter, scoring 12 of their 14 points from the free throw line. Murphy accounted for 10 points in the quarter, hitting the lone field goal and making 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.
The Tartans found success inside the paint in the third quarter, scoring 14, with Murphy connecting on all five of her shot attempts for the period. A layup by Murphy with 3:46 to play gave the Tartans their largest lead, seven points, since the first quarter, as the home squad was up 52-48 heading into the final period.
A 12-6 run for the Eagles to start the fourth quarter gave the visitors a 60-58 lead. Michelle Bevan scored the first six points of the run.
After a Tartan timeout, senior Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) drained a three-pointer which started a 12-0 run, as the Eagles missed their next nine shots, only connecting on a layup with 14 seconds to play, giving way to the 70-62 Tartan victory.
Murphy's 32 points go down as her sixth game of the season with 31 or more points. Junior Jackie Hudepohl (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook (Colgate)) scored 17 points, making 4-of-6 free throw attempts in the final minute. Senior Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) tallied 11 points and four assists, while Poss finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.
The Eagles were led by Shellie Kaniut's 13 points off the bench.
On Sunday, February 21, the Tartans host 12th-ranked University of Rochester (19-4, 9-3) at 2:00 p.m. The Tartans last defeated the Yellowjackets at home in 2012 when the Yellowjackets were 11th in the nation.
