(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Carnegie Mellon University senior Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and freshman Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Phillips Exeter Academy) were honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA) when the 2018 Indoor Track and Field awards were announced Thursday. Schofel was named Most Outstanding Performer in the field events while Bennett Jr. was named Rookie of the Year. The honors come after the Tartans placed second at the UAA Indoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday, February 25.
Schofel was crowned the UAA Champion in the weight throw with a season-best toss of 16.75 meters. It marked the third straight year the senior has won the event at the championships. He also placed third in the shot put with an indoor career-best mark of 14.11 meters.
Bennett Jr. became the first 60-meter dash UAA Champion in program history when he finished the race in an identical time to his preliminaries performance of 6.99 seconds. That time stands up as the school record, topping Andrew Chang's mark of 7.05 seconds set last year.
Bennett Jr. is the third representative from Carnegie Mellon to receive the UAA Indoor Track and Field Men's Rookie of the Year award. Teammate Rai Walters won the honor in 2016 and Andrew Chang earned the accolade in 2014.
