  • Athletes and Team Named to USTFCCCA All-Academic Team
    July 27, 2012
    The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the men’s 2012 Division III All-Academic Track & Field Teams and Carnegie Mellon University was included on the list. A total of 74 institutions earned the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.1 or better.
  • Aldrich Named to the USA Track & Field National Team Staff for 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships

    Carnegie Mellon University Associate Head Track and Field Coach Gary Aldrich has been named men’s throws coach for the USA Track & Field National Team at the 2012 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Championships. The Championships will be held in Barcelona, Spain from July 10-15.

    Carnegie Mellon University senior Ryan Kissell (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) finished his track and field career with the highest academic and athletic honor one can garner as he was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Men's Track and Cross Country Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

    Carnegie Mellon University had two athletes named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team for men's cross country and track and field for the 2011-12 season; senior Ryan Kissell (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and junior Evan Gates (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). CoSIDA recognizes outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments by honoring deserving athletes with All-Academic recognition with the official sponsor of Capital One.

    Sophomore Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) of the Carnegie Mellon University's men's track and field team competed at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Saturday, May 26. The championships were held in Claremont, California hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

    Sophomore Zacharay Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) of the Carnegie Mellon University men’s track & field team received an invite to compete at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Division III Track and Field Championships held May 24-26 in Claremont, California hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Erra-Hernandez will be competing in the shot put.

    Multiple athletes from the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team took to competition at the 6th Annual Gator Invitational in hopes of improving on their season-best performances. The meet was hosted by Allegheny College.

    Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Most Outstanding Performer in the running events, as announced Thursday, May 3. The honor comes after the Tartans finished second at the UAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday, April 29.

    The Carnegie Mellon University men’s track and field team hosted the final day of the 2012 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships Sunday, April 29. The two-day event was held at Gesling Stadium. The Tartans ended the competition in second place with 149.5 points while Washington University won the title scoring 195.5 points.

  • John Polles ’67 Drew on Athletics Experience During Distinguished 25-Year Military Career

    John Polles arrived on the Carnegie Tech campus in 1963 faced with an important decision – should he enroll in the institution’s physical education or ROTC requirement? Since Polles was going to play football and run track, the physical education route wasn’t particularly appealing, so he enrolled in the campus ROTC program. Four years later, he embarked on a distinguished 25-year career in the United States Army and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

The sixth-year coach was named Mideast Assistant Coach of the Year for both teams.

Freshman Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) set a school record while numerous other performances were career and season bests.

  • Tartans Defeat Rival Case Western Reserve in Dual Action

    The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team defeated University Athletic Association foe Case Western Reserve, 69-58, in dual meet action Saturday, February 4 in Cleveland, Ohio. However, the Tartan women fell on their side of the meet, 95-32, giving Case Western Reserve the higher combined point total (153-101) and claim to the Obelisk Trophy in 2012.

    The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled to Geneva, Ohio, for the Midwest Indoor Track and Field Open hosted at the Spire Institute. The meet consisted of teams from Division I, Division II and Division III.

Other teams competing consisted of host Edinboro, Robert Morris University, Penn State Behrend, Walsh University, Lock Haven University, Alfred College, Fredonia State University and Alderson-Broaddus College.
  • Tartan Men Open Indoor Season at Marietta

    The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team opened the indoor season with a meet at Marietta College amongst teams from Division II and Division III schools. The Tartans had five top-three finishes on both the track and in the field.
