Alla Receives Second Straight UAA Honor
(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – For the second straight week, Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) was named University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week. This time he collected the honor for his performance at the USTA/ITA National Small College Division III Championships.
Alla was crowned the USTA/ITA National Small College Division III Singles Champion on Saturday, October 12 in Ft. Myers, Florida. The sophomore, who was unseeded, defeated the No. 3 seed sophomore Skylar Butts of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-4, 6-1, in the championship match. In the second set, Alla fell behind 1-0 before winning six straight games for the victory. The sophomore also won 11 of the final 13 games.
Alla became the second male Tartan to win the ITA National Singles Championship. In 2000, current Carnegie Mellon computer science professor Kayvon Fatahalian won the event.
