(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team began the 2016-2017 season at a double dual meet with Allegheny College and Case Western Reserve University at Case Western Reserve on Saturday, October 29. The Tartans topped both schools, defeating Allegheny 238-60 and CWRU 231-69 behind 13 event victories.
The 200-yard medley relay of freshman Richard Deng (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South), junior Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), senior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and senior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) started the meet with a first-place finish in a time of 1:35.67.
Freshman Daniel Li (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) earned the team's first individual win of the season when he touched first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:46.03. Sophomore Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) picked up his first win in the 200-yard freestyle as he finished the race in 1:42.66 ahead of freshman teammate Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy) in 1:43.51.
Mehta led a sweep of the 100-yard backstroke with a first-place time of 53.79. Sophomore Winston Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) touched the wall just ahead of his brother in the 100-yard breaststroke to win in 58.18. The Tartans also swept the event with freshman Connor Clayton (Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) touching third in 1:01.01. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Winston again touched first with Clayton placing second and Jay taking third. Winston's winning time was 2:12.32.
Freshman Rip Lyster (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) earned a victory in the 200-yard butterfly when he touched in 1:54.90 while Hawke was first in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.45 and second in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.95.
Sophomore Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) won the 1-meter diving event with 290.10 points, as junior DeShawn Green (Newport News, Va./Warwick) was second with a career best 208.40 points. Bamforth also won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 264.55. Green followed him for another second-place showing and another career best with 190.05 points.
In the last freestyle event of the day, Li returned to the pool to win the 500-yard freestyle in 4:43.44. Mehta followed it with a first-place performance in the 100-yard butterfly when he touched in 52.31 and Lyster closed out the individual events with a first-place finish in the 200-yard IM in 1:58.19.
The team closed the meet with a first-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay when Mehta, Hawke, freshman Ryan Fitzpatrick (Montgomery, N.J./Montgomery) and Jay touched in 1:27.46.
The Tartans will return to the pool in a home meet against Clarion University on Saturday, November 5 at 11:00 a.m.
