(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team hosted 23rd-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest with the Bears earning a 2-1 double-overtime victory. The Tartans are now 8-3-1 overall and 1-3 in UAA play while the Bears move to 6-5-1 and 2-1-1.
Junior Elliot Cohen (Solana Beach, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) put the Tartans ahead 1-0 in the 14th minute after he headed in a long pass from junior defender Jacob Moskowitz (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier Township). The service by Moskowitz was from midfield and angled to the center of the 18-yard box. Cohen jumped over the defender and flicked the ball back and over Washington's keeper charging out for the ball.
Senior keeper Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / Northern Highlands Regional) had two point-blank saves nine seconds apart in the 22nd minute off header attempts from Washington's Ryan Sproule. In the 35th minute, Sproule was able to get a shot by Lam when he dribbled down the sideline and to goal, firing a shot from two yards out and over Lam who attempted to cut the angle.
In the second half, Cohen's low-driving shot in the 71st minute was stopped by Connor Mathes while Lam continuously came off his line to punch service attempts clear of the net. In the 84th minute, junior Nicolas Poveda's (Miami, Fla. / Coral Gables) shot inside the box was blocked by the defense and senior Philip Petrakian's (Redwood City, Calif. / Sacred Heart Preparatory) right-footed shot was saved by Mathes in the 85th minute.
Washington had three scoring opportunities in the first overtime but all three were wide of the net. In the first minute of the second session, the Bears got forward and scored off a rebounded shot. Will Sproule was the goal scorer after Lam made a diving save on a shot attempt by Aidan Ryan.
The Tartans will move out of conference play for their next match when Thomas More College visits Pittsburgh on Thursday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m.
