(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team won its fifth match of the year when an 8-1 score toppled Allegheny College on Monday, September 17. With this game, the Tartans' record moves to 5-0-1 as the Gators move to 3-4-0.
The first three goals of the game were scored in a three-minute time frame. Junior Nicolas Poveda (Miami, Fla. / Coral Gables) flicked a header to the far post from a cross by senior Philip Petrakian (Redwood City, Calif. / Sacred Heart Preparatory) in the 11th minute to start the scoring.
In the 12th minute, Petrakian again was in the play when he fired a shot forward that was picked up by his teammate, junior Jack Painter (Bethlehem, Pa. / Moravian Academy). Painter quickly turned with possession and fired a shot for his second score of the year. Forty seconds later, Poveda played a cross from the left side of the field to senior Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Buffalo Grove) running at the far post who added to the score with a one-touch pass into the net.
Junior Alex Dziadosz (Boxford, Mass. / Phillips Academy Andover) gave a long pass forward into the box for sophomore Patrick Kollman (Little Silver, N.J. / Christian Brothers Academy) in the 40th minute. After a touch to settle the ball, Kollman shot to the far corner of the goal for another tally for the Tartans.
The second half started with the Tartans on the attack again with junior Elliot Cohen (Solan's Beach, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) chipping the ball over the keeper for the first goal of the second half in the 48th minute. A minute later, after a corner kick skipped through the box, Allegheny's senior Erik Orta knocked the ball into the net for their first goal of the match for the Gators.
For the sixth goal by the Tartans, Poveda dribbled around a defender for a shot in the 66th minute. When the ball rebounded off the keeper, sophomore Nick Islam (Lansing, Mich. / East Lansing) got a quick shot off into the left center of the net for his first career goal.
Goals seven and eight were scored by Kollman and Cohen, respectively. The former was a quick passing succession from Poveda to Cohen to Kollman for a goal from the left side. In the latter, Kollman gave a pass across the field to Cohen for the finish.
The Tartans travel for their next match on Friday, September 21 against Grove City College. Kick off is set for 4:30 p.m in Grove City, Pennsylvania.
