Benger Named Second Team D3football.com All-American

(SALEM, Va.) – Junior running back Sam Benger (Hingham, Mass.) of the Carnegie Mellon University football team was named a member of the 2016 D3football.com All-America team as announced Friday evening prior to the 2016 Stagg Bowl in Salem, Virginia. After landing a spot as honorable mention a year ago, Benger garnered second team accolades this season.

Benger recently claimed AFCA Division III Coaches' All-America First Team honors, one of just four non-seniors named to the 25-member first team. He was also named to the D3football.com All-South Region First Team and was awarded Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Offensive Player of the Year honors. Benger also repeated as the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Offensive Player of the Year and was named to the University Athletic Association (UAA) First Team. The junior ended his campaign rushing for 1,671 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Benger ranked second nationally in rushing touchdowns and scoring with 170 points (28 touchdowns and a two-point conversion), both are school records. His 1,671 rushing yards ranked third best in Division III with his 151.9 yards rushing per game ranking fifth. Benger became Carnegie Mellon's career rushing leader this season, gaining 4,333 yards in 32 career games. His 4,333 rushing yards currently rank fifth on the PAC's all-time list while his carries (725) and rushing touchdowns (49) rank sixth.

This is the 18th annual D3football.com All-America team, one of two recognized by the NCAA for inclusion in their record book (along with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America team).
