Carnegie Mellon Names Eric Grotzinger Faculty Athletics Representative

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon University Interim Director of Athletics Josh Centor recently announced Eric Grotzinger as the department’s NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), beginning at the start of the 2013-14 academic year. Grotzinger, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs in the Mellon College of Science, replaces Jim Garrett, who was named Dean of the College of Engineering in January 2013.

“We are thrilled that Eric will serve as Carnegie Mellon’s Faculty Athletics Representative. He is a champion for intercollegiate athletics and has been intimately involved with our program for years. I am looking forward to the opportunity to work closely with Eric in support of our students’ academic and athletic pursuits at the university,” Centor said.

Grotzinger, who advises the incoming class of first-year students and assists in the advising and mentoring of upper-class students has been a tremendous supporter of the Athletics Department over the years.

“I have had the pleasure of attending many athletic events and watching our scholar athletes perform at a very high level both on and off the field,” said Grotzinger. “I am delighted to serve as faculty representative so that I can contribute to this excellent athletic tradition.”

The FAR is a member of the faculty at an NCAA member institution. He or she has been designated by the institution to serve as a liaison between the institution and the athletics department, and also as a representative of the institution in conference and NCAA affairs. Each institution determines the role of the FAR at that particular institution.

The role of the FAR is to ensure that the academic institution establishes and maintains the appropriate balance between academics and intercollegiate athletics.
