As the Carnegie Mellon University campus community celebrated the last day of classes for the 2017-18 academic year, the recreation and fitness staff hosted a triathlon for students, faculty, and staff. The Super Sprint Distance Triathlon, advertised as the CMU Tri 3 was a hit in its inaugural showing.
Twenty-three participants started the day at 6:30 a.m. with the choice of swimming 400 meters (8 laps) or rowing 1,500 meters. They then transitioned to the indoor cycling studio for a 6-mile bike ride before finishing six laps around the outdoor track.
The Career and Professional Development Center was represented the most with five staff members competing.
Of the 23 participants, 13 were women. There were seven undergraduate students, four graduate students, and 12 staff members.
The top 3 places for each gender were:
McKenna Houston – 35:03
Jonny Cagwin – 35:47
Nowell Kahle – 38:16
Mary St. John – 32:20
Kim Hochstedler – 34:29
Rebecca Kern – 37:56
All participants received t-shirts while the top three in each age group were awarded a medal at the conclusion of the event.
