Vision

To provide our athletes with the highest quality healthcare and ensure access to the most qualified specialists and state of the art facilities in the area.

Mission

To provide our student athletes with outstanding care, injury prevention, recognition, treatment and rehabilitation as well as educational opportunities utilizing the most up to date research and/or standards.

About US

Support for student-athletes is provided by a team of clinicians including licensed athletic trainers (LAT), team physicians, strength and conditioning specialists, university health services personnel, other allied health care professionals and athletic training students.  Our clinicians are required to work within the standards of their profession and are the primary health care providers responsible for the prevention, evaluation, immediate care, treatment, and rehabilitation of all intercollegiate athletic injuries.  In addition to their roles within the athletic department the athletic training staff members also serve as clinical preceptors for the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University’s Athletic Training Programs.

At Carnegie Mellon University we look to promote the overall health and wellness of our student population through administration of the Sports Medicine Assessment of Risk Tendencies (SMART) program and oversight of the Plaidvocates. The Plaidvocates are Peer Health and Wellness Advocates (PHWA) is a peer-to-peer volunteer organization of student-athletes committed to enhancing the health and well-being of the CMU Varsity Athletic community, while the (SMART) program provides educational workshops in areas of nutrition, alcohol and substance abuse, mental health, and sexual assault and relationship violence prevention.

The Sports Medicine Department operates two fully equipped facilities with emergency, therapeutic modalities, exercise and rehabilitation equipment.  Our association and proximity to the world renowned University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) enables our athletes also have access to the most qualified specialists and state of the art hospital facilities.
